What is an UPS Uninterruptible Power Supply?

There are already many articles on Google that give the definition of uninterruptible power supply, but there are still many people who are new to this system who do not know exactly what an uninterruptible power supply is! Uninterruptible power supply or UPS system, it is a process of AC-DC (commonly known as rectification) and then DC-AC (commonly known as inverter). When the city power exists, the rectifier rectifies to charge the battery and at the same time provides DC voltage to the inverter When the mains power fails, the battery pack directly provides direct current (DC) voltage to the inverter to output standard AC power. Depending on the application area, they can be as small as a book or as large as an entire room, uninterruptible power supplies are essential for mission-critical environments!

The UPS Power Supply Performs Three Main Functions:

  • Regulate the input dirty electricity from the utility company;

  • Provide you with clean, uninterrupted power;

  • Provide ride-through power to cope with voltage dips or short-term power outages, and achieve seamless system shutdown during complete power outages.

Uninterruptible Power Supply Components

UPS includes the following main units:

  • The rectifier/charger generates direct current to charge the battery and power the inverter

  • Inverter, which produces high-quality power, is not interfered by all public power sources, especially micro-outage, and is within the tolerance range compatible with the requirements of sensitive electronic equipment.

  •  Batteries, provide sufficient backup time, and replace the mains as needed to ensure the safety of life and property

  • Static switch, a semiconductor-based device that can transfer the load from the inverter to the mains and back without interrupting the power supply

UPS backups are usually used to protect telephone switches, computer centers, various industrial process control and monitoring systems, emergency lighting systems, telecommunications, transportation, substations, aerospace, railway systems and other hardware. In these hardware, accidental power outages may cause casualties. , Serious business interruption or data loss. UPS equipment varies in size, from equipment designed to protect a single computer (with a rated voltage of approximately 200 VA) without a video monitor to large equipment that powers an entire data center or building. The world's largest uninterrupted power supply, the 46 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), is located in Fairbanks, Alaska, and supplies power to the entire city and nearby rural communities during power outages.

Uninterruptible Power Supply History

No one really knows who created uninterrupted power supplies, when it was created, and where it was created. There is no clear answer to this question. In fact, industry insiders say that no one can claim to have created UPS equipment. Many scientists have put forward theories and conducted research on this problem. This idea has existed in the community for a long time before it was formed.

John J. Hanley was the first to apply for a patent for this purpose, which was granted on April 3, 1934 as "a device for maintaining an uninterrupted and uninterrupted power supply". We think this is an appropriate definition of UPS, but it is indeed a very long-looking name, and it is difficult for many people to remember this name.

Modern UPS system is a far cry from the equipment that existed at the time. The earliest UPS power consisted of a flywheel, which could provide short-term backup power. This rotating system is inefficient and cannot support modern servers and databases. After all, rotary UPS only provides backup. It does not provide much surge protection. In the past few decades, UPS backup power has been constantly evolving. Today, you can use UPS backup systems to protect your power supply in situations where the main power supply is unsafe, such as voltage fluctuations, short interruptions, or complete power failures.

How Does An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) Work?

To truly understand the UPS system, it is very important to be familiar with the types of UPS equipment and how it works!

With three main types of uninterruptible power supplies, UPS systems can be used to adapt to various applications. They meet the needs of businesses and consumers. A UPS power backup is an offline device that can detect electrical failures and automatically switch to battery power. The other two UPS categories are Line Interactive and Online devices. Online is the more expensive option. Each type of UPS can maintain the normal operation of network equipment in the event of a power failure. Functions such as electric energy metering vary by model.

How Standby UPS Works?

This type is the most basic and simplest and low-cost for power protection. The backup UPS will switch to the condition of full charge as backup power for the connected equipment if the common power supply has problems like a blackout, voltage surge, or voltage sag.

Operation Principle: The battery backup UPS will switch to DC battery power and then inverts it to AC power to run the connected equipment when the utility power comes with irregular situations like dropping to a below common level or surges above safe voltage level.

Applications: Consumer electronics, POS systems, Computers, Security systems, and other normal electronics equipment.

Limitations: For mission-critical environments such as sophisticated and sensitive data centers, the UPS backup system(off-line) is not the most suitable way for power protection because it operates without a real static switch so it needs a certain time to transfer the load to the inverter.

How Double Conversion UPS works?

This type always provides clean, consistent, and near-perfect power without considering the condition of incoming power.

Operation Principle: Double Conversion UPS(offline) will convert the incoming AC power to DC power and then again back to AC power. It doesn't require a switch to DC power because it can operate on isolated DC power 100% of the time and does not need time to transfer.

Applications: Mission-critical IT equipment, large data centers, large telecom installations, and storage applications, etc. It is also suitable for advanced network equipment when it comes to a blackout, voltage sag, surge, voltage spike, frequency variation, or harmonic distortion.

How Line Interactive UPS Works?

This type of UPS power supply has adopted technology that allows it to correct minor power fluctuations in event of under voltages and overvoltages without switching to battery. Similar to Standby UPS, it can provide backup power for the connected equipment. However, the difference is that it improves the automatic voltage regulator or AVS protection and maximally reduces the unpredictable risks from any voltage.

Operation Principle: The line-interactive UPS has an auto-transformer that regulates under voltages and overvoltages without switching to battery, providing common and static power in event of a blackout, voltage sag, voltage surges, or over-voltage.

Application: Consumer electronics, Gaming systems, PCs, Network equipment, Mid-range services, and other electronic equipment.

Uninterruptible Power Supply How Long Does It Last?

What is the average running time of UPS power backup? When are you at risk of failure? This is a common question, and the answer depends on many different variables, including batteries, fans, and capacitors. Although some battery backup UPS systems can be used for 15 years or more before they need to be replaced, these major components fail much earlier.

Batteries are the main short-term power storage for most power backup ups systems. "How long can they last?" is a major question, depending on how large a UPS you have and the type of equipment it protects.

For most typical computer workstations, there may be an UPS battery backup, which is rated to allow the machine to work normally after 15 minutes of power failure. If the machine needs to survive for hours without power, then a more powerful backup power solution may be considered, which includes generators and other components. Even if the UPS is supplying power to a very small load, it must still run its DC (battery) to AC converter (inverter), which consumes power. A 1000VA UPS may be able to power a small office computer for about 7 minutes. Upgrade to a 10kVA UPS, and you may see this number jump to about 27 minutes. On the other hand, if the ups batteries are too small, the usable time will be shortened to a few minutes or less.
